Context
As of 2004, only 3% of young women and 14% of young men
aged 20-35 years old had completed one or more years of secondary school in
Elangata Wuas. Nevertheless, attitudes towards education are positive. Schooling
is on the rise. In the same year, 2004, 79% of boys and 64% of boys aged 7-14
years were enrolled in primary school.
Goals
Since January 2006, Africa SOMA has supported the secondary
education of 13 pupils. Students in their final year of primary school in 5
participating primary schools in the Elangata Wuas community compete for scholarships
towards secondary tuition. Scholarships are awarded to the 2 boys and 2 girls
with the highest scores on the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE)
exam. Each bursary is 16,000Ksh ($250CAD) per annum, for the four years of their
studies, covering about 3/4 of total costs. We also award one School Improvement
Bonus, of 10,000 ($150) to the school with the highest KCPE average.
Management
The headteachers of each of the schools meet every year
to certify the winners. A representative of the Elangata Wuas Resource Center
maintains contact with previous winners and their secondary schools to keep
up to date on their progress and school experience.
