Context
The Kenya Institute of Education has removed creative
arts from the national curriculum. Consequently, students have little
opportunity to learn through imaginative exercises. Further, with no postal
service, no electricity or internet, and patchy phone reception, young
students have little opportunity to engage and learn from their global
peers.
Goals
To broaden the horizons and stimulate creative expression
of primary school students across the globe by connecting them to peers
through educational art exchanges.
Program
It's a simple idea – but one which shapes
the imagination and worldview of students in Kenya, North America and
the EU. Since 2006, Africa SOMA has connected dozens of primary schools
through art exchange projects. With the assistance of our volunteers,
classes prepare art exchange projects on a variety of themes for their
peers living elsewhere. Africa SOMA volunteers also provide educational
presentations in the classroom to introduce pupils to life in the country
and community of their partner school.
Management
Much of the initiative for art exchange partnerships
comes from our volunteers and interns, who oversee projects from beginning
to end. In Kenya, Africa SOMA collaborates with schools in Kajiado District,
southern Kenya, schools in the Nairobi slums, and schools in the highlands
near Mt. Kenya.
Financial Support
Africa SOMA supporters.
